SPORTS WIZ TRIVIA
AUGUST '07

Thanks Kevin. In a world without Kevin McClatchy we'd probably be watching the Pittsburgh Wild Things at 37 year old Three Rivers Stadium. I'll take a struggling major league team over that any day. True, he did preside over a dozen losing seasons, but let's not forget the oasis of the 1997 campaign. That was something special and in a lot of ways was right up there with the '90, '91 and '92 seasons. Let's see what we can recall about a season when having the lowest payroll in the majors was an in-your-face badge of honor.

1. Name the speedster who was the Buccos' regular leadoff batter.

2. Who led the team in home runs?

3. Three pitchers tied for the team lead in wins with 11. Can you name the three?

4. The K.C. Royals became the first American League team to play a regular season game here as interleague play began. Name the two former Pirates who joined the Royals that season after each spending eight years here.

5. The Chicago White Sox also visited Three Rivers Stadium in 1997. Name the Sox "superstar" who made more money that season than the entire Pirates roster. (He struck out four times in the first game and only managed two hits in the three game series.)

6. Who was the Pirates' 1992 first round draft choice then in his second season with the major league club?

7. The highlight of the year was the July 12 Cordova/Rincon no-hitter. What distinction does that game still hold among all major league no-hitters?

8. Who were the three Bucco starting shortstops, two of whom were lost to injury and one who came from the Cubs for the September stretch?

9. Name the Pirates legend who rejoined the team that year (in a front office capacity) after more than a decade's estrangement.

10. The Pirates ended up in second place. How many games did they win?
