What's Really Going On
Morelli
May Be The Man
Don't be surprised to see Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli
drafted in the first half of the first day of the 2008 NFL Draft
- no matter what kind of season the Penn Hills grad has this year
for the Lions. Morelli has all the tools that NFL scouts look
for in first round draft picks - the cannon arm, the quick release,
the physical strength and he's more athletic than you think.
Player To Be Named Later
After completing trades with the Cubs and Giants for Cesar Izturis
and Matt Morris respectively, the Bucs owe each club a player-to-be-named
later. The Morris deal was completed when the Bucs send Single-A
pitcher Steve MacFarland to the Giants. The Izturis deal will
be completed in the off-season, but forget the rampant speculation
that Zach Duke will be the player to be named. By Major League
Baseball rules, there are two restrictions at work involving "players
to be named later." First, the transaction must be completed within
six months. And second, the player named later can't have played
in the same league as the team he's being traded to. That's why
the player named later is almost always a minor leaguer - and
that's why it CANNOT be Zach Duke.
Time Waits For Timmons
Don't get up in arms over the lack of development from Steelers
first round draft pick Lawrence Timmons. Sure, Timmons has shown
surprisingly little since his named was called as the 15th pick
of the 2007 NFL Draft. But, in his defense, the groin injury he
suffered in mini-camp was legit, and he probably rushed back too
soon because he felt he had something to prove to his new coach.
He's finally healthy but way behind, and that's OK. Remember,
Troy Polamalu was not a very good player his entire rookie season.
Relax, and let's reconvene about Timmons in another 12 months.
