SPORTS WIZ TRIVIA
OCTOBER '07

Seems like only a few years ago we were saying West Virginia Mountaineer football had arrived. Looks like we can now say, until further notice, they are now a perennial power. Let's remember, however, the program has been around for well over a century and has a pretty colorful history. Can you identify the following figures from Mountaineer football seasons past?

1. In 2005 this WVU (and NFL) legend became the very first Mountaineer to have his number retired.

2. He coached the Mountaineers for three seasons in the '30s and was later co-coach of the fabled Philadelphia-Pittsburgh "Steagles."

3. He coached the Mountaineers in the '70s, moved on and became the winningest coach in college football history.

4. He attained immortality for his call of the "Immaculate Reception," but let's not forget all those seasons as the "voice of the Mountaineers."

5. This two-time All-America middle guard was drafted ninth by the Steelers in 1970 and spent a single season here before embarking on a successful career in the Canadian Football League. His younger brother coaches the Cleveland Browns.

6. He transferred to WVU from Penn State after Todd Blackledge beat him out for the starting QB job there.

7. This Hill District native quarterbacked the Mountaineers in the late '80 and later set an Arena Football League single season rushing record that stood for over a decade.

8. He was one of WVU's most prolific passers as well as a two-time Academic All-American. He got his law degree after five years as a Houston Oiler.

9. This Mountaineer (and Central Catholic) QB wasn't drafted until the sixth round (by the Saints). Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redmond and Tee Martin were taked ahead of him.

10. He won more games than any head football coach in WVU history.
